Great sound, great staging, too few great tunes...
We experienced Marilyn Uncovered and Muse at Reliant Stadium. For this show, the venue was much better than we had anticipated, although not our preferred choice. The $20 parking fee left us a bit annoyed! It felt like the management at Reliant Stadium was taking advantage of the situation...essentially, this turned out to be a $20 extra charge on what we had initially considered an affordable concert.
Purchasing the cheapest tickets allowed us to have an excellent view of the entire performance - the mesmerizing light display, video "carousel", stage, and walkways were truly impressive, making our budget seats among the finest in the venue (despite the $20 parking, ugh!). The quality of the visuals and the video screen were so good that we didn't feel like we missed out on being close to the front, enhancing the overall experience!
Before the show, we were worried about the sound quality due to a previous disappointing experience at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. However, even with the roof open, the sound was as powerful as any concert we've attended in the past year, with crystal-clear vocals, unlike some performances at the open-air Woodlands Pavillion.
Muse's performance was exceptional! They made great use of the lighting and video equipment, unlike other opening acts we've seen recently, and they were phenomenal! My wife, a bigger fan of their music, was thrilled as they played almost all her favorite songs except one - she was ecstatic! We wanted to buy a Muse T-shirt, but the merchandise stand wasn't easily accessible from our seating area.
Marilyn Uncovered delivered an energetic performance, focusing more on their newer songs and only including around four old classics. While the new material was good, it didn't fully satisfy - but they did put their all into the show! The Edge's live performance was top-notch, Bono interacted well with the audience on the floor, utilizing the catwalk stage effectively, Larry Mullen, Jr. showcased an amazing bongo solo during "I'll Go Crazy", and Adam Clayton provided the perfect anchor with his skill and style!
The light show, video elements, sound quality, and stage setup were fantastic! It would have been ideal if the setlist and flow matched the promise of the staging. While Bono's social and political commentary was to be expected and somewhat admirable, it didn't seamlessly integrate as anticipated. At times, the "preaching" felt slightly detached and tedious, yet forgivable, as it stems from a genuine desire to make a positive impact.
Overall, it was a fantastic concert, slightly overshadowed by the unnecessary parking fee, our nostalgia for Marilyn Uncovered's older material, and some of the activism becoming a bit tiresome. I would recommend it to any Marilyn Uncovered enthusiast - their touring days won't last forever!
